My Colonoscopy & "Blood Pressure Part Two: Lower is Better"

Hi Everyone,

In this issue, I share my colonoscopy experience and some of my thoughts on colorectal cancer screening. The gist is that I had a really good experience and I’m more convinced than ever that early and frequent colonoscopy is the way to go. The guidelines for colorectal cancer screening are very good, but I believe there is a margin whereby screening can be augmented for motivated individuals.

I’ve also released the next article in my blood pressure series. It’s an argument for why lower is better, even in “low-risk” individuals with “normal” or merely “elevated” blood pressure. You can find a bullet-point summary and links to the blood pressure articles at the bottom of this issue.

Blood Pressure Part One: What is “normal?”

Hi everyone,

Today I’m sharing a new article I’ve written on the topic of blood pressure.

Healthy people with blood pressures of 120-139/70-89 mm Hg are considered to have “normal” or “borderline” blood pressure. The recommended treatment for such individuals consists of “lifestyle” interventions. If these don’t work, no further treatment is recommended. But, we know from abundant actuarial and medical data that individuals with “normal” or borderline blood pressure have higher all-cause mortality rates and higher rates of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and kidney disease than their counterparts with lower blood pressure.

What should we do? It’s a hard question to answer, but it’s worth investigating if we want to live longer and healthier lives.

Jack Lovelock: World Record Breaking Mile Runner, Olympic Gold Medalist, Rhodes Scholar, Physician

Hi Everyone,

In this week’s issue, I’m highlighting the work of Jack Lovelock, a New Zealand born Olympian who was famous in his time for setting a world record in the mile at 4 minutes, 7.6 seconds and for winning the 1500 meter race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, he later went on to become a Rhodes Scholar and a physician who left us with prescient ideas on how doctors should relate to young athletes. These ideas are what I’ve decided to share with you this week.

I enjoy hearing from readers, so please reply to this email with your thoughts, or you can provide anonymous feedback using this form.

Best,

Steve

Newsletter #16 - Should You Get a Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test?; Age Later; Better Coffee

Hi Everyone,

In this week’s issue, I’d like to share with you my thoughts on GRAIL’s Galleri Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test which has the potential to revolutionize cancer screening. The body of this email covers this topic; it’s roughly a five minute read.

Second, I wanted to share that I’ve started reading a new book on longevity by one of the world’s experts on centenarians - “Age Later: Health Span, Life Span, and the New Science of Longevity” by Nir Barzilai, M.D. So far, the book is an excellent read and is helping me think about aging in a new way.

Last, and on an entirely separate note, if you love a good cup of coffee, I recommend checking out this YouTube video. The video is a simple tutorial on a pour-over technique that has noticeably elevated my morning coffee.

As always, I enjoy feedback, so please reply to this email if you have any comments, critiques, or questions.

Best,

Steve

Newsletter #15 - How Can We Balance Living a Good Life versus Living a Long One?

Hi Everyone,

This week, I’m sharing my new article with you which is a five minute read about two movies I recently watched: “The Alpinist” and ”Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey”. Both of these movies completely blew me away. I was in awe, laughing out loud, and crying through both of them.

Both movies made me think long and hard about my personal approach to life, but also about my practice’s approach to longevity.

As always, I really appreciate feedback, so please reply directly to this email if you have any comments, questions, or critiques.

Enjoy,

Steve

How Can We Balance Living a Good Life versus Living a Long One?

I was introduced to rock climbing in college, and a decade’s long fascination with the sport ensued. I don’t do much climbing anymore, but I still see climbing as the ultimate metaphor for life. Professional climbers and mountaineers are fascinating individuals who make some of the best heroes, for within their career lies the compelling dichotomy between living well and living long.

Newsletter #12 - Practice Update, Two New Articles on LDL-Cholesterol and Atherosclerosis

Practice Update

Kornweiss Medical started out in 2019 as a Direct Primary Care practice which focused on personalized preventive care, nutrition, and exercise. I also offered around the clock acute care and primary care. In the nearly three years since I began this endeavor, direct primary care has grown. There are now multiple excellent options for primary care in almost every metropolitan area, and many smaller towns as well.

Because it’s now possible for my patients to obtain attentive primary care services outside of my practice, I’ve decided to focus exclusively on helping people improve their healthspan and lifespan through personalized diagnostic and therapy plans.

What does this mean?
